7 Must Haves to Remember When Traveling with Kids

7 Must Haves to Remember When Traveling with Kids

Ask any parent who has traveled before with their kids, and you will know that for many, the prospect of traveling with the kids can be a daunting one. All too often we see and hear the stories of parents that bring way too many things along and overcomplicate things.

So what should you bring? What are the most important things to have on hand when you travel with young kids? Here are 7 of our Must Haves for items to be sure to bring when you travel. Keep in mind this is not everything you need to bring, but are 7 key items that can sometimes be overlooked.

  1. The Car Seat.
Yes, even though it may seem cumbersome, especially if you are flying, you really should bring your own car seat from home. Sure you can always request to have one at the rental car location, but there is no guarantee for its quality or history. You have no idea if it has been in an accident or not. So, in this case, be sure to bring one you trust. There are many compact car seats out there that are easier to travel with, and here is one that is liked by many moms set to come out next month.

  2. Kids IDs/Health Insurance Cards.
You never know what can happen when you travel, and if you are not someone that always carries these around for the kids, then it is a good idea to bring them along. We ourselves had a couple times on trips where we ended up in a local urgent care or dentist and needed the ID card, so it never hurts to be prepared.

  3. Infant/Child Pain Relief & Saline Spray
Being away from home without all the comforts can sometimes be a little shock on the system for a young child, and how many times have we seen kids pick up a little cold while traveling? There is nothing worse than being stuck in a hotel room with a crying baby or child at night because they aren’t feeling their best, so be sure to bring these basics along.

  4. Small Scissors.
It may sound a little strange that we make sure to include this, but there are many times where having a little pair of scissors completely makes sense. You can usually pick a pair up at the airport to make sure it is going to be allowed on the plane with you, if you are flying.

  5. Ziploc Bags.
Probably one of the best travel things to include. They are great to keep everything easily organized while traveling. Contain spills if a bottle accidentally gets left unscrewed (It’s no fun to arrive at the location only to find that your suitcase is covered in shampoo.

  6. Baby Carrier/Travel Stroller
If you are traveling with a baby, this one is definitely a life saver. Especially when getting on and off a plane, the baby carrier keeps the baby secured while leaving your arms free to do everything you need to do. We recently got to try a great new brand that makes both a wonderful and compact stroller for travel, but also a good carrier. You can check them out here.

  7. Small Toys
Children love to open new things and while on a trip it can be extra fun for them to have something fun to unwrap at the airport or in the car. We do love using some tech for movies and other entertainment, but it is nice to have things for the kids that are not tech-driven to keep them engaged and occupied. Here is a fun list we found of cool ideas for toys/games that cost $10 or less.

So, there you have it. A few must haves to keep in mind for the next time that you are traveling. We always love to hear about where people go.

What are some of your favorite things to bring along in your “must-have” travel kit?
