Probiotics Vs. Prebiotics
There has been a growing trend in the fitness and health community that tells about the importance of proper gut health. We keep seeing and hearing about why it is so important to have the proper balance and optimal amount of good bacteria in the gut. I can dive more into that in another post, but today I wanted to address the question that I am often asked, and that is to share what the difference is between probiotics and prebiotics.
First of all, let’s talk a bit to clarify what probiotics are. These are the live bacteria that is found in the intestines that help the body to digest food. When you have a good balance and healthy amount of these bacterias, then the body’s digestion will perform well.
Prebiotics then are the material that the probiotic bacteria need in order to flourish. The prebiotics are the fiber that gut needs to allow the probiotic bacteria to be strong and grow.
Think of it as if prebiotics were the soil that allows the plants (the probiotics) to grow. The better the soil, the better the growth and performance of the plants.
It is important that we seek out both to add and supplement in our diet so that we give the body its best chance to work in our favor.
Do you guys want me to share some favorites that I have for probiotics and prebiotics?
